Which Door Will You Choose?

Text by: Christine Pethel, Co-Editor-in-Chief
“The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.”
-Flora Whittemore
What do you think of when you hear the word “door”? Do you simply imagine the large piece of wood that is hung on the front entryway to your house? Or do you actually think a bit broader, imagining that the door symbolizes a passageway from one world to the next? Surprisingly, doors have been used throughout centuries to create feelings of mystery, intrigue, movement, journeying, and boundaries. They are new opportunities waiting to happen. Doors are used to symbolize passageways into new worlds, or an escape from a horrible past. Literal doors have been used and made famous by the meanings attached to them. Famous places to see,

famous movies to watch, and famous people you know have lived behind such doors.
Doors have meaning. And doors mean progress.
“Doors can lead you to the future or bring you back to the past. Either way there’s always something behind them that is intriguing or inspiring if you let it.”

We have a choice each day which door to enter through…which path we want to take. The choice we make then determines what our future will look like. Will it be a door that leads to a beautiful field of purple, yellow and crimson wildflowers on a path to a fresh mystical waterfall? Or will it be a door that leads to a mysterious, intriguing fairy-tale of curiosity, fulfillment and excitement? It could even be a door that opens up into a new hallway, with a large number of brand-new doors, spanning farther than your eyes can see, giving you even more opportunities to further exhilaration.

Sometimes, however, we choose to go through doors that lead to an empty, gray room with stagnant air, or through doors that are simply revolving, around and around leading us nowhere but in circles. This month, as our first theme within Polite Society journey, it seemed only fitting to learn and focus on the meanings that have been given to “doors,” because doors are our entryways to a new journey, a new life and new growth. By continuing to follow us along a journey we too are taking, we hope you will find and take your own new journey in life. And hopefully it will be a journey that will open your eyes to new things, new opportunities and newfound wisdom.
“Keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious, and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Because only when we are truly happy and moving forward and creating change within ourselves, can we ever inspire others for the same thing. And that is one of the ultimate goals of a polite society.
“When our eyes see our hands doing the work of our hearts, the circle of Creation is completed inside us, the doors of our souls fly open, and love steps forth to heal everything in sight.”
-Michael Bridge
