Synchronicity

Text by: April Ruffner

The connection between the mind, body, and spirit has been acknowledged and practiced by human beings for thousands of years as a synchronized relationship between three essential pieces of our own being. In essence, it is believed that when the mind-body-spirit connection is in total agreement and alignment, we are connected to our Higher Power*, which, in turn, creates a state of joy. Being in this connected state makes us feel centered and balanced; the mind is in agreement with the body, which is in agreement with the spirit. Each month, within the Mind-Body-Spirit Section, I would like to share with you some valuable tools and techniques that can help you uncover your joy; for joy is truly our natural state of "BE-ing." Joy is our purest emotion, which takes us back to a place of innocence. It is the acceptance of "what is" and "what can be." It is the feeling of gratitude for all that we experience in our lives, as well as finding the "good" in seemingly "bad" situations. It is what we are destined to experience throughout our existence in life. And if this is not what we are experiencing, then we must uncover the reasons that are keeping us from joy.

The first tool I'd like to introduce is learning how to recognize "Synchronicity" in our lives so that we may take full advantage of its placement and purpose.

Synchronicity is described by many as "meaningful coincidences,” but I also believe it to be a physical manifestation of an internal desire. As Venice Bloodworth states in Key to Yourself, “Behind every bit of good fortune lie the causes that we ourselves have some time, somewhere set in motion.” In other words, whatever is happening in your life at this moment, somewhere in the past you had a thought that set the course in motion to make it manifest.

As an example, Synchronicity helped me to rediscover a particular joy in my life by finding purpose for a talent I had assumed many years previously but hadn't had the opportunity to use for quite some time. I received my Cosmetology License a few years ago because of a love I had for helping to create beauty in others. Time passed and after having young children, I found my art completely on hold. I thought about it at different moments, wished sometimes I could return, but wondered how I ever would with the already limited time, and lack of opportunity, I had at that stage of my life. What I didn’t realize was the minute I conceived those thoughts, my life’s path was beginning to change.

The door of Synchronicity opened for me, on a day of no particular interest, when my sister nonchalantly asked if I would cut hair again. Her own friend was looking for a stylist for her son, of which my sister offered her my services. I thought, "Sure, it's only one client." I had a great time and remembered why I loved it so much. From there, the client was so happy with my work that she, in turn, posted my name in response to a community request for a children's hairstylist. The word-of-mouth soon spread quickly, and I am now actively cutting hair in peoples' homes within my own community. I am still able to raise my young kids, and it has been a great way for me to utilize my creative talent.

As I look back at this experience, I am able to recognize, and be grateful for, a synchronized event that has brought joy into my life. It may seem like a coincidence, but I now know that this happened because of my focus, and my desire, to one time be able to use my talents again. Synchronicity is a principle of cause and effect. It brings together your intentions matched with God's intentions for you. All you have to do is think it, then have faith it will happen, and it will come to pass. As Julia Cameron quotes in her book, The Artist's Way, “... When we move out of faith and into the act of creation, the universe is able to advance. It is a little like opening the gate at the top of a field irrigation system. Once we remove the blocks, the flow moves in. In other words, leap and the net will appear." Cameron also states that when we change, the universe will continue to further and expand upon that change. Synchronicity is also a form of being true to yourself and your inner needs and desires. It will bring exhilaration to your inner soul if you are able to manifest the dreams of your spirit through your thoughts. The result often is confused with being somewhat of a spontaneous event, because it is quite often unexpected. But it is actually the result of your own inner thoughts. Learn the concept of Synchronicity. Believe that you can plant a seed for your desire, and know that, at some point, it will grow and become a reality. Then learn to recognize when the Universe has placed an opportunity for your dreams to manifest and be grateful for what you have been given. The Universe will continue to manifest the dreams of your heart, which in turn will you bring you pure joy.

Synchronicity Exercise: Try writing in a journal the desires of your heart. This will plant a seed for your desire to manifest. Trust that, at some point, this seed will grow into reality.

*The term "Higher Power" is most often referred to as "God," but also identified as whomever, or whatever, a person refers to as their "Higher Power," such as "Spirit," "Universe," "Energies," etc. Polite Society recognizes the diverse beliefs that everyone has in a higher power. Throughout most all of our articles, unless specifically deemed differently, when any term that refers to a "Higher Power" is used, it is considered interchangeable with each reader's own personal belief.
